Babingtons ceramic CAT mug is a tribute to Mascherino, our mascotte since the 1950’s, when a Roman stray cat used to come into Babingtons and sit around all day, amusing our clients. Another chapter of our extraordinary story! The raw material used for this mug and it’s design guarantee the best experience possible. The capacity (300 ml) will allow you to enjoy your tea for much longer, whilst the thick ceramic will keep it hot. The CAT ceramic mug is dedicated to all lovers of Babingtons, its history and characters. And Mascherino is one of the many characters that populate our history.
“They discovered him one morning snuggled between two pillows. Small, shiny black fur, two white spots around his eyes and one on his neck. The maids picked up the kitten, carried him into the garden next to the kitchen and offered him a cup of milk. From that day, late 1950s, he became a regular guest at Babingtons. At certain hours he became the absolute master. He came and went as he pleased, knew where to find food, warmth and cuddles.He was “christened” with the name Mascherino.
Giulia, director of the hall, would arrive every day at 11 a.m. and, as if by magic, Mascherino would appear out of nowhere, rub his legs against her, and together they would go to the kitchen where Giulia kept a package of lung. Sated, and looking satisfied, he perched on the crate from where he would not move until closing. So that when thinking about a logo for Babingtons, the choice to draw a black cat with its white spots came naturally. It was Valerio (nephew of Isabel Cargill, founder of Babingtons) who did the graphic design and stylized Mascherino’s silhouette and then put it on the objects, boxes, napkins, cloth, paper, and envelopes. Today Mascherino superstar is gone, but he has remained in our hearts. Who knows! Maybe one day he will come back! For now we celebrate it with our CAT mug and an exquisite MASCHERINO PERRRFECT blend of black tea and berries.
