Starting from one of the most commonly used phrases of the British-don’t forget your umbrella-we wanted to create with a play on words an invented name to remind everyone not to forget their tea! The design of the mug shows a Victorian teapot resting on a Victorian parasol. A celebration of the era in which Babingtons was founded, that of Queen Victoria.
The DON’T FORGET YOUR TEABRELLA mug is part of the Babingtons collection of mugs dedicated to our history. Each of them in fact tells the essence of Babingtons with wit and charm. The eccentric design created by our designers encompasses the many facets of Babingtons and its history. The story of the love for Tea Time of two women, Isabel Cargill and Anna Maria Babington, who at the end of 1800 opened the first tea room in Italy, in Piazza di Spagna, in the heart of Rome, conquering with their Roman teas and visitors from all over the world.
The design represents two elements very popular among English ladies of the late 1800s: a parasol and a teapot. An ode to the grace and elegance of Afternoon Tea Time.

“Afternoon Tea Time was born in the Victorian era. Kicking off the 5 o’clock ritual would have been Queen Victoria herself on her coronation day, 1838, in the drawing rooms of Buckingham Palace. Taking tea was forbidden for the young Princess: the court governess had, in fact, decided that the brew could not be drunk at every hour of the day as was the custom throughout England. So when Victoria becomes queen, she immediately asks for a good cup of tea to be brought to her.

In all likelihood it was Anne Mary, seventh duchess of Bedford, who instituted Afternoon Tea around 1840. During a vacation at her home in Belvoir Castle, surprised by unusual hunger in the late afternoon, she asked her maid to prepare tea for her and accompany it with bread, butter, jam and pastries. The habit, which year after year is enriched with small sweet and savory dishes and which brings with it fashions and revolutions, spreads in the blink of an eye. The transformation of Afternoon Tea into a daily appointment requires a real etiquette. Indications of behavior, as well as of the menu, for the hostess and for the guests. The same ritual that, albeit with some inevitable corrections, is still followed today. We, in the dining room, observe it with extreme attention.
